Sound Avenue Land

Last year we started farming a second plot of land located on Sound Avenue in Riverhead. Since our farm events are always held at our farm on Peconic Bay Blvd, we realize that many of you have never seen what this land looks like.

Here are some photos I took yesterday evening at sunset. The meadow had just been mowed by our friend Chris Wines of Ty Llwyd Farm in Jamesport. By the way, if you're ever out on the East End, stop by Ty Llwyd Farm on Sound Avenue for the most delicious fresh eggs!

First Harvest!

Here are some photos of our first harvest of the season. This week we're harvesting arugula (both baby and bunched), radishes, spinach, boston lettuce and rhubarb.

My First Taste of Summer

Yesterday evening after a long Sunday getting ready for the first week of deliveries, Matthew left me in the kitchen to make dinner and took out across our back yard to the field. He came back a few minutes later with a little present...the first beautiful red strawberries of the season! I made him stand out on the back porch with the mosquitoes just long enough to capture this picture. The light was perfect.

Cutting Potatoes

Our dear friends Hal and Fran made their annual appearance at the farm for cutting seed potatoes this spring. Seed potatoes are cut into pieces (averaging one "eye" per piece) and then planted out into the fields to grow into a potato plant.

Potato Harvest 2007

I wanted to share some photos of our potato harvest from last week. This has been our best year of potatoes!

Here is the potato digger hooked up on the back of the tractor.

The potatoes are dug out of the ground and dropped back on top of the soil.

Here they are still attached to the roots ready to be harvested, washed, and packed into your CSA boxes!

Spring is here!

We're welcoming spring here on the farm with the completion of our third greenhouse and the arrival of some long-awaited tractor equipment. Noe and Miguel have been busy in the greenhouse seeding all sorts of veggies that will soon be transplanted out into the fields. Here are some pictures of the greenhouses and the seeding that's going on inside them...
