The Haygrove

We installed a Haygrove Tunnel out in Field 2 this year to grow early tomatoes in. I'll let Matthew tell you all about it in a future post, but here are some photos taken just after the whole top blew off! Everyone ran out to secure the plastic and re-tie the ropes that hold it down.

This was a few weeks ago before the drip irrigation had been installed, so the tomatoes look a little thirsty. They've been growing tremendously ever since- so I'll get out there one day this week and post some updated shots.

Cutting Potatoes

Our dear friends Hal and Fran made their annual appearance at the farm for cutting seed potatoes this spring. Seed potatoes are cut into pieces (averaging one "eye" per piece) and then planted out into the fields to grow into a potato plant.

Potato Harvest 2007

I wanted to share some photos of our potato harvest from last week. This has been our best year of potatoes!

Here is the potato digger hooked up on the back of the tractor.

The potatoes are dug out of the ground and dropped back on top of the soil.

Here they are still attached to the roots ready to be harvested, washed, and packed into your CSA boxes!

CSA Week #1

We have a beautiful first share of the season! Spinach, Arugula, Red Radishes, Japanese White Salad Turnips, and Rhubarb.

First CSA delivery of the season!

It's the first CSA delivery day of the season and everything went incredibly smoothly! Our new packing room is proving to be an amazing improvement over our old diggs, and we're becoming so efficient at packing the boxes and getting them on the truck, that Frank left in the truck ON TIME this morning!

We're in the Green Guide!

Amy Topel wrote a wonderful profile on our CSA program in the latest issue of The Green Guide.

Here's an excerpt...

Talk to the cooks in any upscale restaurant in New York City and you'll find that most fall into one of two categories: those that hope to own their own restaurant and those that long to become farmers. I belong to the group that fantasizes about life on a farm. Matthew Kurek—unlike the rest of us—didn't just dream about moving out of the city and learning to farm, he actually did it....
